Hello everybody, I have a big problem. I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT, whenever I take him for a walks we have problems. He has problems with other male dogs and he behaves badly when he sees one. So, going for walks is always a challenge for us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!

Walking is a big deal for any dog. All ylyhe smells and sights. Walks to dogs are how they comminicate with the outside world. To them a walk is like watching the news to us. Nancy it seems you have a reactive dog, i.e reavts badly to dogs on a leash. I would advise exercise, exercise and more exercise before the walk. Or maybe go back further anf work on basic heel training. Tire your pup out and let him practice following you around, you are the alpha you lead the walks. Work with the stuff in your backyard, weave in and out of objects, you leading and the dog following. When its time to enter the front if there is any pulling go back to the backyard and pratice more- the dog only gets to go for a walk when it can behave itself. If the dog is still too excited,oh well, have to try again.tomorrow the dog must learn youre in control and he has to behave to get to go on a walk. As for reacting to other dogs you can do an exercise like the first one just add a second dog. When your dog is heeling and not pulling on the leash have a friend bring their dog, make sure its on neutral territory, not your dogs house not your friends. Walk the dogs on separate sides of the street, its better for the dogs to get a look at each other like that, instead of face to face. Would you like it if a stranger just came right up in your face!? If your dog tenses make sure you stay calm dont feed into it. When both dogs seem to be well acquainted You can have your friend and their dog on the same side of the side walk. Walk your dogs towards each other if your dog starts to bark growl get tense turn around you can even teach the command turn around and use it on walks. Be warned though some dogs just won't like other dogs no matter how much training, if that's the case maybe walking in less populated areas or at night may be best. Socializing puppies at a young age can help prevent this type of behavior but it can be fixed and if not it may just be the dogs personality. Training is a slow and repetitive process but be diligent! ****another important note **** Most behavioral issues come from lack of exercise, pent up energy can become frustration and frustration can become anger. If you don't have time to train /exercise your dog do not get one!!
