Toothaches can be a real – headache. No puns intended. But seriously, having a toothache is terrible – they can instantly spoil the best of your days and leave you confined to your room till your pain gets better. And of course, going to the dentist sends shivers down most people’s spines, so that’s out of the question. So, how to eliminate toothache at home?
How to Get Rid of Toothache
Cloves
Cloves contain a substance called eugenol, which is what makes it anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and mildly anesthetic. Even though their taste sucks, cloves really do help in curbing infection and reducing whatever pain you may be feeling.
Before science and modern technology took over, people used to take cloves for their toothaches. Now there are two ways you can use them: Take a bud or two and chew it without swallowing for as long as you can. Do this 3-4 times a day; or topically apply clove extract, not essential oil, on the affected tooth with a Q-tip.
Salt water mouthwash
Most of the times, the sugar in your diet is what the bacteria in your mouth feeds off. These bacteria break down the sugar, thus producing lactic acid, which in turn erodes your teeth’s enamel. And when the enamel is gone, your teeth take zero time in becoming infected and decayed.
A warm salt water wash not only neutralizes the production of lactic acid, but also contracts tissues inside your mouth that have been inflamed by absorbing excessive fluids from them. All you need to do is add 1 tsp. of salt to half a glass of warm water, and rinse your mouth for 30 seconds with it. Do this 3-4 times a day.
Alcohol mouthwash
Might sound stupid, but if you’re an adult who’s looking for a fun way on how to get rid of toothache, give yourself a mouthwash with hard liquor like vodka, brandy or scotch. Alcohol has antiseptic properties and it pretty much works the same way as a salt mouthwash does, except that as an added benefit, it also acts as a numbing agent. The instructions too, remain the same.
Garlic
This is another naturally occurring pain relief spice. All you have to do is crush a bud or two of garlic, add a pinch of black salt or even table salt to it, make a paste and apply it to the affected area with a Q-tip. You might feel a tiny sensation, but that’s to be expected, especially if your garlic is a little spicy or extra juicy.
Asafetida
Not only does this work for toothaches, but has proven to be an effective remedy for bleeding gums as well. All you need to do is:
Crush some asafetida, around ½ tsp.
Add 2 tsp. lemon juice to it
Heat it slightly over a candle
Use a Q-tip to apply it on problem area
Make sure you do not let your saliva touch that spot for a minimum of 3 minutes.
Vanilla extract
One of the primary ingredients in vanilla extracts is alcohol, and we’ve already established that it works perfectly for a toothache. Plus, if you’re the type who doesn’t want to smell like a drunk the next day at college or work, vanilla extract is the next best option for you.
Use a cotton swab to apply it to the affected area. Do keep in mind, though, that the relief it provides is temporary and you will have to apply it frequently in order to keep the pain in check. Other extracts that work just as well include lemon and almond.
Guava leaves
This is one way of how to get rid of toothache that works obviously only when you have fresh guava leaves at hand. They possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic properties, which make them the perfect 100% natural way to get rid of your toothache. And what do you have to do? Nothing but chew on the leaves till they start releasing their juices. If that sounds too much for you, then take 7-8 leaves and boil them in a cup of water. Let it cool, add some salt and maybe an extract or essential oil of your choice and use it as a mouthwash.
Essential oils
Essential oils like peppermint oil and tea tree oil are excellent pain blockers. All you have to do is add 10 drops of the essential oil to 1 tbsp. of a type of oil like coconut oil, olive oil or grapeseed oil, mix it and apply it to the affected area with a cotton swab. Repeat this process for at least 4 times a day and when you do so, make sure saliva doesn’t touch the area for those 4 minutes.
Myrrh mouthwash
For those who didn’t know, Myrrh is a resin that is extracted from the Commiphora trees. It is anti-inflammatory in nature and also acts as a natural astringent, which makes it a perfect method for how to get rid of toothache. Take a glass of water, add 1 tbsp. of myrrh to it and let it simmer for around 30 minutes. Keep it aside and once it has cooled, strain the mixture. Keep it in an airtight container and inside your fridge when you’re not using it. Don’t forget to use it at least 5 times a day, every day.
